The art of positioning is best formed in the crucible of experience. My early roles built a solid foundation in the art - weighing technical product features, listening to customers, training and supporting sales and field engineering groups, developing collateral materials, and competitive analysis. Becoming the conduit between customers and the development team.
These skills were refined and extended while moving into more senior roles dedicated to introducing new products, developing their sales channels, and building a product / corporate vision.
